Last night's Championship TT was contested in a whistling east wind that caused more than one rider to whimper and wail. Despite the despicable detriment three determined riders rode well below the sixty minute mark. Brent Goetz harnessed his considerable potential to earn the win in this year's championship event. By riding a 56:11 in just his second season of racing he certainly has even faster times to look forward to in future years. Although Jeff Crawford can only see his younger years with the help of a rear view mirror, the only sight in that rearward facing mirror last night was the rest of the field sans Goetz. Jeff's fitness has been absolutely stellar this season, and the rumors are he's been honing his Hard Man status by riding fifteen to twenty hour weeks. That task is even more impressive given he makes his living through self-employed manual labor! Dan Ritter displayed more his fine fitness this season by taking the third step of the championship podium.
In B Group racing The Defiance Boys are certainly proving their time trialing mettle over the Wheelmen, as they once again claimed the top two spots. Mick Poncsak posted the fourth fastest time of the night with a very commendable ride. And given the gap between Nick and the rest of the B Group, it doesn't appear anyone will provide him with challenge or concern. With his admirable second place Jeff Nixon again showed that when it comes to racing, the clock is a trusted friend of his. Third place was hotly contested, and it was determined by the slimmest of timing margins. Mike Faehnle stopped the clock 1/100th of a second faster than Khalil. It will be interesting to see how this narrowest of contests plays out in another three weeks at the next 40K TT.
Although the Club doesn't see James Mason too often, Jamie made his presence known by time trialing to top honors in the C Group. Lavinia is always the ever-consistent TTist, and she repeated that metronomic display once again tonight, as she claimed the second step of the podium. Although Grandfather [or is it Great Grandfather?] Wheelmen Hal Wilson claims he's been up to no good, his ride tonight certainly reveals a much different tale! Hal rode an incredible time, especially when one considers he's almost old enough to be my father!
I'll work on the overall standings tomorrow 19 June.
